Mississippi Defensive Driving Laws

Three Mississippi statutes govern court-ordered defensive driving. Two of them let a court offer an approved driving course instead of entering a violation on your driving record, and the third qualifies drivers 55 and older for a car insurance discount. Advanced Driving Academy's course is approved by the state for all three.

Youth traffic violator, under 21 - Mississippi Code 63-1-55

This law gives judges the authority to offer minors who violate Mississippi traffic laws - other than a D.U.I. - the option of attending a driver education and training program instead. A student who completes the course successfully will not have the violation entered on their driving record. Our program is approved by the state and is offered online and in classroom locations throughout Mississippi.

Adult traffic violator, over 21 - Mississippi Code 63-9-11

This law provides for sentencing a first-time adult traffic violator to a safe-driving school, and provides that the violation will not be entered on their driving record. This is the statute most adults are referred under when a Mississippi court offers defensive driving in place of a conviction.

Important: if you are taking this course because of a traffic ticket, you must have the court's permission before you begin. Contact the court handling your citation first, then review the course details and register.
